Iran's Revolutionary Guard strikes Syria for Tehran attacks

A Guard statement carried on Sepahnews website said it targeted "terror bases" many "terrorists" were killed and their weapons had been destroyed in the strike.

The launch of surface-to-surface medium range missiles by Iran's Revolutionary Guard into Syria's Deir ez-Zor province comes as Islamic State militants fleeing a USA -led coalition onslaught increasingly try to fortify their positions there.

"The spilling of any pure blood will not go unanswered", the IRGC said in its statement.

Iranian television showed footage of the missiles being launched into the night sky.

The fire broke out at the 24-storey block, which contained 120 one- and two-bedroom flats, shortly before 1 a.m. on Wednesday. A number of demonstrators gained access inside the council building as police struggled to contain the protest.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claims it launched airstrikes into eastern Syrian on Sunday, according to the Guard's website.

Deir Az Zor is an oil-rich province that links ISIL's de-facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa, with territory controlled by the group in neighbouring Iraq.

The missile strikes are the first reported ground-to-ground attack from Iran into Syria since the Arab country descended into a civil war in 2011.

The IRGC had vowed revenge for the attacks and accused Saudi Arabia of supporting ISIS in the operation.

Most victims were trapped in their cars while they were trying to get out of the area and charred, according to the government. The Associated Press , citing Portuguese media, reports that investigators trace the cause to a "dry thunderstorm".

The attacks targeted the parliament building and the shrine of the founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Khomeini.

Six assailants killed at least 16 people in the twin attacks, which ISIS claimed.

The Revolutionary Guards are fighting in Syria against militant groups who oppose President Bashar al-Assad.
