Jury deadlocked in Bill Cosby sexual assault trial

Bill Cosby has arrived for the fourth day of jury deliberations in his sexual assault trial. Even though Cosby's attorney motioned for a mistrial, Judge Steven T. O'Neill sent the jurors back to reach a verdict.

Heading into Friday's round of talks, the jury had deliberated for almost 40 hours since getting the case Monday. "That does not mean that a verdict that takes several days will be a good thing for him, but if the jury takes time deliberating that means they are discussing reasonable doubt and if they can believe the complainant". O'Neill rejected the request, and, after the jury had left the room, told prosecutors and the defense team he was not going to put a time limit on deliberations.

The disgraced comedian is now awaiting a final verdict as the 12-person jury deliberates on whether or not to find him guilty of three counts of criminal indecent assault against Andrea Constand, who claims she was sexually molested by Cosby in 2004.

Cosby's spokesman said the impasse showed that jurors doubted Constand's story.

If the former comedian is convicted, Cosby could face a maximum of thirty years in prison.

Victoria Valentino, who has alleged Cosby of sexually assaulting her in 1970 and has been present throughout the trial, said it was "maddening" that jurors could hear Constand's testimony and still be stuck.

Cosby did not testify, but his account was shown to the juror in the form of a police interview from 2005, as well as sworn depositions he gave in 2005 and 2006 as part of Constand's civil lawsuit against him.

If a mistrial is declared, prosecutors must decide if there is enough evidence to seek a new trial or decide to drop the charges.

In closing statements, the prosecution portrayed the actor as a sexual predator who deliberately drugged the Canadian citizen so she would be unable to resist his advances at his Philadelphia home.

Sequestered for almost two full weeks, the jury from Allegheny County has been in deliberation since Monday evening.

Bernard says Cosby threatened her and her boyfriend at the time by saying he would sue them and ruin her career if she came forward with her allegations.

Constand claimed that Cosby drugged her and proceeded to molest her, but Cosby claims that their relationship was consensual and the Benadryl he gave her was just supposed to be used to help her relax. He added a hung jury would be a victory for Cosby. It was at Temple she met Cosby, a member of the board of trustees.

More than a dozen excerpts from Cosby's deposition, including the "friends" comment and his acknowledgment that he'd gone "somewhere between permission and rejection" during a previous encounter with Constand.

The case has already helped demolish Cosby's nice-guy reputation as "America's Dad". In most cases, the judge will simply tell the jury to keep deliberating and review the others' points of view. She read a prayer before telling Cosby's supporters what she says he did to her.

Legal experts said the trial fits the "he said, she said" arguments so common to sexual offense cases.
