London and Brussels will start negotiations on a Brexit 19 Jun

Looking more sombre than his British counterpart, he said he hoped they could agree on a format and timetable on Monday.

Britain kicks off its formal European Union exit talks Monday, almost a year after the country voted to leave the bloc, amid a backdrop of domestic political chaos, a weakening economy, a spate of deadly terrorist attacks and simmering social tensions following a fatal fire in a government-run housing project.

It's been a year in the making and, with never a tiresome moment, Brexit negotiations commence today, leaving the pound on tender hooks as the markets look to get a sense of how European Union negotiators will position themselves, the tone of the respective sides expected to be their signals of intent over the next 20-odd months. "We must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit", he said.

Brexit Secretary David Davis arrived in Brussels to launch talks he hoped would produce a "new, deep and special partnership" with the EU. A snap election early this month, in which Prime Minister Theresa May lost her majority, only added to the problems.

Eight others were taken to hospital and two were treated at the scene, Basu said, adding that all of the victims were Muslim. London Van Attack has been termed as the potential terror attack by the Prime Minister of England, Theresa May .

Day one of the negotiations, at the European Commission buildings in Brussels, will be followed by a joint press conference this evening by Davis and the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier, a former French foreign minister and EU commissioner.

Mr Barnier made clear that Brussels intends to stick to its timetable of dealing with the terms of Britain's withdrawal before moving on to discussing future trade relations. There is more that unites us than divides us.

UK Brexit Secretary David Davis said he sought to "do all that we can to assure that we deliver a deal that works in the best interests of all citizens".

A top German business lobby is urging negotiators for Britain and the European Union to quickly come to an agreement over how Britain's departure from the EU will affect cross-border trade - and avoid a "hard Brexit".

Police said eight of the injured were hospitalized; the other two had minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Several witness accounts indicate that the victims were worshippers leaving a mosque in London's Finsbury Park .

The talks in Brussels consist of an opening session with both Mr Davis and Mr Barnier each joined by a large team of officials.

Today's talks however are likely to focus on the practical details of timings for the coming months, with the big, divisive issues left aside for now, officials said.

Barnier has warned that the negotiations must be wrapped up by October 2018 to allow time for all parties to ratify a final accord by March 2019.

"I think the whole process will lead to a happy resolution which can be done with honour and profit to both sides", Johnson said as he went into an European Union foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg.

Saudi Arabia footballers refuse tribute for London terror victims
However, some Saudi fans claimed it was not within Islamic culture to take a moment of silence to respect the dead. Reports suggest that the visitors' substitutes bench also failed to stand to observe the tribute.

He noted that taking such an approach to the talks "will be good for the United Kingdom and good for the rest of Europe" in the long run.
