London attack had 'hallmarks of terror'

One man died and 10 people were injured after a van drove into pedestrians near the mosque in Seven Sisters Road, north London, in the early hours of this morning.

Police arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of driving the van into a group of people as they left the Finsbury Park Mosque in north London shortly after midnight.

Although one witness told Sky News that two other people fled the scene, police said there were no other suspects at present but that the investigation is in its early stages.

The driver, who witnesses say screamed "I'm gonna kill all Muslims" after ploughing into worshippers, was pinned to the ground before police arrived.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Athman, said: "People were screaming: "It's a terrorist attack, it's an attack, this guy attacked us", and I had to run back and tried to save people who were still alive and giving water, helping the police".

A police photographer records the scene at Finsbury Park in north London, where a vehicle struck pedestrians in north London Monday, June 19, 2017.

A man was inside in the van, I saw with my eye, and the old man was also on the ground, and I see some people were also injured. Ambulance crews said ten people had been transferred to hospital.

Charlie Elphicke, the MP for Dover and Deal, wrote: "Deeply shocked by the attack at Finsbury Park - we must stand firm against terrorism and all those who seek to divide us".

"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship", he said.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said extra police had been deployed to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan, describing the attack as "an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the attack was being treated as a "terrorist incident". Eight others are in hospital and two more were treated at the scene.

Mohamed Kozbar, the chairman of the Finsbury Park mosque, said his community was shaken by the attack "because this area is very peaceful".
