With 57 percent of votes counted, the Interior Ministry said Sunday that Macron's Republic on the Move! party had won 41 percent of the vote, followed by the Republicans with 23 percent.

Polling agency projections suggested that Mr Macron's En Marche party could take 355 to 365 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly, the powerful lower house.

Many of Macron's lawmakers will be political novices, something which will change the face of parliament at the expense of the conservative and socialist parties which have ruled France for decades. The ministry said the far-right National Front was in third place with almost 10 percent followed by the Socialists with 6.2 percent.

While Melenchon is known for bold talk, his words underscored worry about an eventual all-powerful Macron who, Melenchon said, "is going to end up believing he walks on water".

Having never held elected office, he seized on the growing resentment toward a political elite perceived as out of touch, and on public frustration at its failure to create jobs and spur stronger growth, to win the presidency.
