Notre Dame, Paris: Hundreds put in terror lockdown

'Situation under control, one policeman injured, the assailant was neutralised and taken to hospital, ' Paris police said on Twitter.

As dozens of police vans and helmeted police officers cordoned off the area around the famous cathedral in central Paris, visitors were advised to stay away.

"One sees that we have gone from a very sophisticated terrorism to a terrorism where, in the end, any tool can be used to carry out attacks", Collomb said.

Pictures on social media from inside the cathedral showed people sitting down with their hands in the air apparently at the request of police.

President Emmanuel Macron has announced he will create a special task force to better coordinate the fight against terrorism. He was shot in the legs.

Grenfell Tower Deaths Rise to 79, London Police Say
Some Grenfell residents had warned months ago that fire safety issues at the tower left it at risk of a "catastrophic" event. Officials are using dental records, fingerprints, DNA samples, tattoos and scars to try and positively identify victims.

Notre-Dame is one of the most visited tourist sites in Paris.

Both France and Britain have suffered a spate of militant attacks in recent months.

The attack was "an isolated act", government spokesman Christophe Castaner told RTL radio on Wednesday.

The counterterrorism office of the Paris prosecutor's office announced it had opened a probe into the incident.

The attacker shouted, "this is for Syria" and wounded one officer before being shot and wounded by other officers, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said.

Britain kicks off Brexit negotiations with EU
Looking more sombre than his British counterpart, he said he hoped they could agree a format and timetable on Monday. Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz says: "If we don't succeed both sides will lose".

The incident comes just months after a police officer was shot and killed by an assailant on the Champs Elysées in an incident that was claimed by the Islamic State group.

The entire area surrounding the landmark cathedral in the French capital has been sealed off.

The incident followed two other attacks on soldiers protecting prominent Paris sites, one in February at the Louvre museum and another at Orly airport in March. Large numbers of police cars filled the area on the Ile de Cite island in the Seine River in the center of Paris as authorities urged people to stay away from the area.

The police department tweeted about the operation on Tuesday afternoon. He appeared to be acting alone.

France is still under the state of emergency imposed after the November 2015 attacks in Paris, when Islamic State jihadists killed 130 people in a night of carnage at venues across the city.

Formal talks on Britain's exit from EU to begin in Brussels
However, there must be unanimous agreement by the EU's 27 other members for that to happen, and that is unlikely before October. Davis struck a conciliatory tone in a statement released overnight, emphasizing Britain and the EU's "shared European values".
