One arrest after vehicle hits people outside of London mosque

After police arrested the suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, the Met's Neil Basu praised those members of the public who had helped prevent him from coming to harm.

The Muslim Council of Britain confirmed that worshippers had been targeted in the attack.

Images of the van showed it was rented from Pontyclun Van Hire in Pontyclun, near Cardiff. "An attack on one community is an attack on all of us", said Police Commissioner Cressida Dick.

The Finsbury Park mosque was associated with extremist ideology for several years after the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, but was shut down and reorganized.

In her remarks outside her official 10 Downing Street residence on Monday, Prime Minister May said the attack was a clear example that "terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms".

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said he had spoken with the chief constable of South Wales Police and was told "his team is fully engaged and working in partnership with the London Metropolitan Police as the investigation into the abhorrent attack at Finsbury Park gets under way".

The chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque says the van crash that hit worshippers was a "cowardly attack" and urged Muslims going to mosques to be vigilant.

Syria peace talks to be held in Astana on July 10: Lavrov
The minister said Moscow calls on Washington to ensure coordination in the work on Syria and respect the country's sovereignty. Lavrov said de-escalation zones were one of the "possible" joint options.

Another witness interviewed by RT News took photos of the van driver as he was arrested, one of which is included top of the article.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Muslim, offered his "thoughts and prayers" on Twitter to the victims of what he called a "horrific terrorist attack on innocent people".

One man was trapped under the van and people tried to lift up the vehicle to free him.

Amin said that when people seized the driver, "he was shouting: 'All Muslims, I want to kill all Muslims.' Literally, he said that".

Eyewitness Abdul Rahman said the driver said he wanted to "kill all Muslims".

Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi, who was at mosque last night, said he was among a group of people helping an elderly worshipper who had fallen down, possibly due to the heat, when the van swerved towards them.

At least two witnesses told Sky News there were three men in the van, but the police statement seems to contradict that, saying no other suspects had been identified or reported to police.

The incident comes at a time when emotions are high in England, where there have been several recent terrorist attacks in recent weeks.

Labour opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted on Monday that he was shocked by the attack and expressed his sympathy for the affected community.

The Muslim Council of Britain called what happened a "violent manifestation of Islamophobia".

He said in his opinion it was a terrorist attack.

Then on June 3, eight people were killed and 48 were injured when three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before leaping out and launching a stabbing spree in nearby bars and restaurants.

Finsbury Park mosque was once infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

On March 22, a man drove a rented vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a police officer guarding the British parliament to death before being shot dead.
