One dead, 8 injured as vehicle hits pedestrians near London mosque

London is once again waking up to bloodshed.

One person was killed and 10 others were injured early this morning (Monday) after a commercial vehicle raced into a group of Muslim worshippers after they had finished their Ramadan services at a mosque in Finsbury Park located in northeastern London.

"It appears that a white man in a van intentionally ploughed into a group of worshippers who were already tending to someone who had been taken ill", the Muslim Council said in a statement. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, according to police.

Police are investigating the crash as a potential terrorist incident.

They also treated two people at the scene who had minor injuries.

A number of police units arrived at the scene and placed cordons around the area.

The building was gutted in a blaze early Wednesday morning that has also left dozens missing and hundreds of others homeless. Clement's Church, where May made her announcement, angry residents shouted "Coward!" and heckled May.

- One man was found dead at the scene, according to police, but it's not clear if he was killed during the attack. He will be given a mental health evaluation. "My friends told me there were two other guys with him but they caught the driver".

The Muslim Council of Britain posted a tweet saying that the van drove into a crowd of people on their way home from Ramadan night prayers at a mosque near Finsbury Park.

Finsbury Park is part of the Islington borough of north London, where around 10% (19,500) of the borough's total population are Muslim.

- Opened in 1994, Finsbury Park Mosque is an unassuming five-story redbrick building in residential north London, close to Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium.

The mosque, which today operates largely as a community center, rose to worldwide notoriety in the early 2000s, due to its links with Egyptian-born radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri.

Al-Masri, who was the mosque's imam from 1997 to 2003, was later extradited to the United States, where he was convicted of supporting al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists, and sentenced to life in prison in 2015.

Since 2001, more than 2,000 American troops have been killed in combat and noncombat roles in the country. There has been no causality reported by the US Troops.

"There has been this concern within the community, this concern within the mosque itself particularly over the years as it has worked to try and reshape its reputation to try and shed that reputation for extremism, for contributing to extremist thought, ideology and indeed perhaps violent acts".

Prime Minister Theresa May described the crash as a "terrible incident". "All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene".

Finsbury Park mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has entirely changed in recent years under new management. In a statement Monday morning, London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident a "horrific terror attack".

"Police say incident has all the "hallmarks" of a terrorist" incident.

"People are going to wake up tomorrow...communities from all different backgrounds, and they're going to be in shock to hear worshippers in front of a mosque were attacked in the same way that people were attacked on the London Bridge", he said.

As with many areas on the fringes of central London, gentrification has seen the arrival of gourmet coffee shops and refurbished bars. Police said earlier that one person was arrested.
