Presidential polls 2017: Amit Shah, Fadnavis meet Uddhav Thackeray

No breakthrough was made in the meeting held between BJP president Amit Shah and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for seeking the latter's support for presidential poll candidate.

The BJP Parliamentary Board meeting - which was scheduled to shortlist the candidate for the country's top post today - was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah. BJP sources said the SP leaders told Naidu that his party should choose a political person.

The party said the BJP should not try to take political advantage of the situation in Darjeeling owing to political differences with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

On record, both parties kept mum on the deliberations at the Shah-Thackeray meet though the BJP termed it as "a courtesy call where talks were held in a cordial atmosphere".

Open calamity, the USGA enjoyed a controversy-free week. "So all around my game is pretty solid and I couldn't be happier". More than worrying about the uncertainty of his career, he was trying to figure a way to close one of these big ones out.

The meeting assumes significance for the BJP as the Shiv Sena is the most vocal critic of the party, the Prime Minister and also Fadnavis.

Naidu, after the meeting, told the media that the name of the Presidential candidate would be announced before June 23. The Shiv Sena had earlier threatened to take an independent stand in the presidential election, reported NDTV.

Bhagwat, 66, recently said he is not interested in the president's post.

Uddhav on his part urged Shah to include the Sena in the selection process. On the recent farm loan waiver announced by the Maharashtra government, Shah had said through it the state was offering relief to farmers.

None of the batsmen could manage a resistance except Hardik Pandya who scored 76. The opening pair put on 128 runs before Azhar Ali was run out for 59 runs.

The elected representatives - all whom will vote in the election - will sign the papers nominating the NDA candidate. "In the current scenario, the Sena is still out safest bet for a stable state government", a senior BJP minister said.

"We wish them all the best... we are not perturbed about winning or losing mid-term elections in Maharashtra..."

The BJP's traditional support base is among upper-caste Hindus but the party has sought to broaden its appeal, winning a landslide victory in a state election in Uttar Pradesh in March with the backing of many low-caste voters.
