"The driver of the van.was found detained by members of the public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident", the statement said.

Several people are being looked after in hospital and one person has sadly died.

A van drove into pedestrians early Monday morning in north London, police say, in what they are investigating as a terrorist attack.

There is a rise in the number of terror attacks all over the world, and even as security agencies introduce rigorous checks and countermeasures, those who carry out the attacks resort to new methods. "Shortly after police cordoned the area", said BBC producer Abdirahim Saeed, who was tweeting from the scene.

Police said they had deployed extra resources "to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan". The witness also said that there were three persons and while two of them managed to escape, the third was held by the people till the police came on the scene at Finsbury Park.

Rudd, who is in charge for government law enforcement, said: "Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have been nothing short of heroic". He also declared that his 'thoughts and prayers were with those affected by the horrific terrorist attack on innocent people'. Police did not confirm that.

Finsbury Park mosque used to be infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

Earlier this month, three men who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization, rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing passers-by, killing eight.

The Sky TV reported that "at least 10 people" were hit by the van.
