Trump 'considering firing special counsel'

Reports emerged that President Donald Trump may sack special counsel Robert Mueller

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday that even if President Trump told him to fire Robert Mueller as special counsel overseeing the Department of Justice investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, he would not follow the order unless he thought there was good cause.

Ruddy sparked a media firestorm on Monday when he told the "PBS NewsHour" that Trump is considering firing Mueller.

The president is reportedly angry about stories about close ties between Mueller and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

"No, I have not", Rosenstein answered.

"This is an illegitimate special counsel", Ruddy said.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions who recused himself from participating in the Russian Federation probe, and as a result, Rosenstein is now the highest-ranking official at the Justice Department overseeing Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Rosenstein told lawmakers that he had not seen good cause to fire the special counsel.

The public testimony Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee should yield Sessions' most extensive comments to date on questions that have dogged his entire tenure as attorney general and that led him three months ago to step aside from the Russian Federation probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is back Tuesday on Capitol Hill for public hearings in front of the budget-writing appropriations committees for the House and Senate. "As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without cause", he added.

In the letter Trump sent to Comey informing him that he was being fired, the president wrote that he had received memos from Sessions and Rosenstein "recommending your dismissal as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

After the shooting, back to bickering at White House, Congress
James Hodgkinson , 66, from Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by police after opening fire in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday. Among other things, Hodgkinson said Trump had screwed up the country " more than anyone in the history of this country".

But Republican former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who initially praised Mueller's selection, said he has changed his mind because the special counsel is hiring some "bad people". Should Rosenstein choose to resign, then the decision would be in an order of the sequence of command at the Justice Department.

"Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue". And unless there was sufficient reason to fire Mueller, he offered, "it wouldn't matter what anybody said". Gen. Jeff Sessions rightly recused himself from any investigation connected with the election. She said such a move would "destroy any shred of trust in the president's judgment that remains over here".

Mueller was succeeded by James Comey, who was sacked by Trump last month while he was overseeing the investigation into potential Russian interference into last year's election and potential collusion with the Trump presidential campaign. That, to me, is the smartest thing to do, the best thing to do, and that's what I think hopefully will happen.

Mueller has already served 12 years as Federal Bureau of Investigation director - two years longer than the 10-year term.

"The president's friends are now pressing the argument that Mueller must go, too".
