A member of President Donald Trump's outside legal team says the president is not under investigation, contradicting a recent tweet from Trump.

A slight majority (52 percent) disapproved of President Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey, but only 22 percent approved, with 24 percent refraining from giving an opinion. His solution? Trump was merely responding to a "fake news" Washington Post story, and besides, tweets don't allow for nuance.

But Sekulow said repeatedly Sunday that "the president has not been and is not under investigation".

Although there is still no word from special counsel Robert Mueller on the obstruction of justice investigation reportedly ongoing against President Donald Trump, a new poll has revealed that most Americans think the president guilty of a felony in interfering with the official FBI investigation into the alleged Russian Federation tampering with the 2016 presidential election.

Every indication is that Trump is indeed being investigated over allegations he fired FBI Director James Comey to disrupt an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections.

Doubt, however, has been cast on that explanation because of cryptic testimony from former FBI Director James Comey last week. Collins' question wasn't the only time the Mueller investigation came up during Rosenstein's hearing on Capitol Hill.

The president has directed some of his frustration at Rosenstein and Mueller. Sen.

"Let me be very clear here, as it has been since the beginning, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction", lawyer Jay Sekulow said on NBC's "Meet the Press", part of a blitz of bookings on the Sunday public affairs shows. "The president takes action based on numerous events, including recommendations from his attorney general and the deputy attorney general's office".

"You've now said that he's being investigated", Wallace said.

Trump's tweets following the report appeared to confirm the investigation, but his lawyer said it only appeared that way because of the character limit on Twitter. "Period", Sekulow told NBC host Chuck Todd.

"No. I just gave you the legal theory of how the Constitution works". He said Trump's statement on Twitter Friday was specifically in response to a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling. "The tape will speak for itself; you said he is being investigated". "The president can not be investigated, certainly can not be found liable, for engaging in an activity he clearly has powers to do under the Constitution". "We're agreed, then", Wallace said.

"But you don't know that he's not under investigation, right?"

"No, Chris, I deal with fact and law", Sekulow said. "The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources that were purportedly leaking information to The Washington Post about a potential investigation of the president".

And it kept going on and on like this until finally Wallace figuratively threw his hands in the air, responding to Sekulow saying there's no investigation after saying he didn't know if there was one.

Sekulow responded that Trump had been getting at a "constitutional issue". He said Trump had learned the effectiveness of social media as a communications tool during the campaign.
