Trump's attorney contradicts himself on investigation denial

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post", he said, referring to a recent story about special counsel Robert Mueller allegedly looking into whether Trump fired Comey last month in an attempt to obstruct an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the United States election.

"The president's response was as it related to the Washington Post report".

Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, said the president was only referring to a news report.

Comey was sacked in May after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote a memo critical of Comey's handling of Hillary Clinton's email investigation, a memo that became Donald Trump's official rationale for firing Comey.

Senator Marco Rubio, who lost the Republican primary election to Trump, called for a "full and credible investigation".

"It's inconceivable he's not under investigation in the obstruction investigation", the lawyer said.

That assessment was at odds with a Washington Post report last week and seemingly with a tweet by Trump himself on Friday.

"Witch hunt" is how Trump characterizes the probe into Russia's election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates.

Separately, a former White House lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was nothing stopping Trump or his lawyers from asking Mueller whether Trump was under investigation.

"The Deputy Attorney General made a point of saying that even in his "negative" memo, he would not recommend that Donald Trump fire Director Comey", she wrote.

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who, like Rubio, sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the panel's work in the Russian Federation probe is far from concluded.

Trump is under pressure to reveal whether he has any tape recordings of private conversations with Comey. Schiff said he wants the White House to acknowledge the tapes or make clear there are no tapes and "it was an idle threat".

And Senate Intelligence Committee member Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

"This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses".

A Trump tweet Sunday renewed his complaint of "a witch hunt." Sen.

Trump returned to the White House on Sunday after spending Father's Day weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat.
