U.S. says it downed Syrian warplane that attacked US-backed fighters

The strike occurred after a Syrian regime Sukhoi SU-22 ground attack jet dropped bombs near US -backed Syrian Defense Force fighters south of Tabqah.

Immediately after the incident, the Syrian Military issued a statement condemning the downing of a government plane after conducting anti-terrorism attacks near Raqqa.

"This blatant attack confirms the coordination between the United States and Daesh", the Syrian statement said, employing the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

On Sunday, a US warplane shot down a Syrian army jet southwest of Raqqa, with Washington saying the army had dropped bombs near the SDF.

"Any aircraft, including planes and drones of the worldwide coalition, detected in the operation areas west of the Euphrates River by the Russian air forces will be followed by Russian ground-based air defense and air defense aircraft as air targets", the report said.

Vanzella said she went to the window and saw "loads of people gathering" in a corner across the road from her window. London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident a " horrific terrorist attack on innocent people " on social media.

SDF fighters entered Raqa on June 6 after months of heavy clashes to encircle it, and the US-led coalition has been backing them with air strikes, equipment and special forces advisers.

A spokesperson for the US-backed coalition said the attack followed a Syrian bombing mission against their local allies, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

This was the first time the USA resorted to engaging in air-to-air combat to make good on that promise. It characterized the incident as further proof of its contention that the coalition is actually backing ISIS, not trying to defeat it.

An American warplane has shot down a Syrian military aircraft that dropped bombs near US-led coalition fighters in western Raqqa, the USA military says. "Zionist project in the region", the army added.

The coalition has for months backed SDF forces in their bid to capture Raqa, an operation in which the regime has not been involved.

Others were shot dead during protests or clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the besieged Gaza Strip. It was the latest bloodshed in a wave of Palestinian attacks on civilians and soldiers that erupted in 2015.

"At approximately 4:30 p.m. Syria time, June 18, Pro-Syrian regime forces attacked the Syrian Democratic Forces-held town of Ja'Din, South of Tabqah, wounding a number of SDF fighters and driving the SDF from the town".

Earlier this month, a US jet downed a pro-Syrian government drone that dropped an apparent dud munition near USA -led coalition forces near the southern Syrian town of At Tanf. The Syrian jet was destroyed by the attack.

The U.S. move proves that Washington has redlines for the Syrian army to stay away from, as such areas including near the Iraqi borders and Raqqa are the share of the U.S. -backed forces.

Turkey considers them terrorists due to their affiliation to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an organization that has waged a violent separatist struggle in south-eastern Turkey for more than three decades. Trump also bombed Bashar al-Assad's forces in April in retaliation for a Sarin gas attack widely blamed on the regime.
