US destroyer takes on water after collision

A search and rescue operation for seven missing sailors of a U.S. Navy destroyer was called off Sunday after it collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant ship, Saturday. Bryce Benson, was airlifted early Saturday to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka and was in stable condition with a head injury, the Navy said. The names of the sailors will be released after all notifications are made.

At 2:20 a.m. local time Saturday, the USS Fitzgerald was moving through a busy shipping lane south of Tokyo when a 29,000-ton Filipino merchant ship rammed into its right side.

Seven sailors were reported missing after Saturday's predawn collision, triggering a major search operation off Japan's Pacific coast, and U.S. authorities tacitly acknowledged there were no survivors.

"U.S. and Japanese support from the Navy, Maritime Self Defense Force and Coast Guard are in the area to ensure that the Sailors on USS Fitzgerald have the resources they need to stabilize their ship. There was a big gash under the water", Aucoin said at the Yokosuka naval base, home of the US 7th Fleet.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of the crew and what they did to save this ship", he added.

Other investigations could come from the US Coast Guard and Japanese and Philippine authorities because of where the accident took place and the Philippine registry of the container ship.

An AFP reporter could see a helicopter and several emergency vehicles at the scene, which was closed off by a wide police cordon. The incident occurred in North London outside of the Muslim Welfare House , which is located near the Finsbury Park Mosque .

Aucoin wouldn't speculate on the cause of the collision, and said he would order a thorough investigation.

The ACX Crystal container ship was berthed at Tokyo's Oi wharf, where officials have been questioning crew members about the cause of the crash.

According to Jiji Press news agency, the ACX Crystal captain said his ship was "sailing in the same direction as the US destroyer and then collided".

Most of the damage occurred below the waterline in the form of a huge gash to the hull near the ship's keel, which led to a "tremendous" amount of water rushing into two berthing cabins and a machinery room, he said.

"Families of the deceased are now being alerted and provided the help they need during this challenging time", the 7th Fleet stated. "This has been a hard day", Vice-Admiral Joseph Aucoin, the commander of the Seventh Fleet, said.

The navy and coastguard are conducting separate investigations, but the Japanese side will ask for USA cooperation in its inquiries, a spokesman for Japan's transport safety board told AFP.

The Fitzgerald limped into port on Saturday evening, listing around 5 degrees, a U.S. Navy spokesman in Yokosuka said.

In a Twitter message issued yesterday, President Donald J. Trump said his "thoughts and prayers [are] with the sailors of the USS Fitzgerald and their families".

The Navy said it had found "a number" of bodies inside the guided missile destroyer, but did not specify if all seven crew had been found dead in the search that took place after it limped back into harbour.

"The incident is now under investigation", the statement said. The ship arrived at Tokyo Bay later in the day.

The Navy, along with the Japanese Coast Guard, had been searching for the seven at sea.
