A van hit pedestrians near a mosque in north London today causing injuries to several people, following which the vehicle's driver was arrested, police said.

A dozen police officers stood guard on a balmy Monday morning at the cordon at the junction of Yonge Park and Seven Sisters Road while several locals looked on.

The van driver was detained by members of the public after the attack in Seven Sisters Road at 12.20am on Monday. "Our prayers are with the victims", the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), an umbrella body, said on Twitter.

Sky News reported that police said the incident happened after worshippers were leaving the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers.

The London Ambulance Service says the injured are being taken to hospitals.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Athman, told AFP: "People were screaming: "It's a terrorist attack, it's an attack, this guy attacked us", and I had to run back and tried to save people who were still alive and giving water, helping the police".

She told LBC Radio: 'Everyone was just running everywhere she didn't realise what was going on at first until she people on the floor.

Witch Hunt." It was the first time Trump had publicly acknowledged that he's under investigation. Angus King, an independent from ME , stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

She told the BBC that the van seems to have hit people who were coming out of the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers finished. But the Met said: "At this early stage of this investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police, however the investigation continues".

The London Ambulance Service did not immediately confirm details of casualties, saying its resources were at the scene in Seven Sisters Road. "I didn't see the attacker himself, although he seems to have been arrested, I did see the van". "There has been one person arrested".

But another witness at the scene said the attacker did not say anything.

The incident is being investigated as a terrorist attack, according to police, and multiple witnesses said the van took a sharp left turn and appeared to hit the crowd intentionally.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police and Islington council regarding the incident", he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has described it as a "terrible incident". Police killed three Muslim extremists who carried out the attack.

In 2015, the mosque was one of around 20 that took part in an open day organized by the MCB to promote better understanding of Islam following Islamist-inspired terrorist attacks in Paris.

"The other was held at the scene until the police came".

A group of men huddled together to condemn the "terror attack" outside the mosque, where people had been engaging in Ramadan.

Eyewitness Cynthia Vanzella told CNN she saw multiple casualties and at least one person who appeared to be badly hurt.

In May, the city of Manchester was targeted with a suicide bombing at a pop concert that killed 22 people.

Vanzella said she saw police put a man into a police auto and take him away, but she didn't see them arrest him.

"Muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in Islamophobia".
