Why Amazon's Whole Foods Deal Is Slamming Pharma Stocks, Too

Through Whole Foods' 460 stores in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., Amazon gains new footholds into its food distribution network, making the logistics and coordination of delivering fresh foods to your doorstep more possible.

Some industry observers say Amazon will find it hard to use Whole Foods to pull away Wal-Mart shoppers because the two stores appeal to different customers.

The online retailer launched a grocery delivery and pickup service, AmazonFresh, in the US about a decade ago and started selling non-perishable food items to Canadians in 2013.

Some shoppers worry about the quality of their produce and say they're rather pick their pears themselves. Amazon poses a "real threat" to FreshDirect, Burt said, adding, "There's room for one more player". They have included well known names across many sectors: Gymboree, Sports Authority and Payless Shoes have all filed for bankruptcy within the a year ago.

"Clearly whoever and whatever Amazon looks at, the fallout from that is who they don't take over", said Shore Capital analyst Clive Black in London.

Matt Stoller, who has previously contributed to The Intercept, warned in a column on Friday that the deal "should frighten all of us", pointing to the ways Amazon's market dominance could have a risky ripple effect throughout the economy.

Man killed in van attack outside London mosque
Witnesses described seeing police giving emergency medical treatment to victims after the incident at 12.20am in Finsbury Park. Numerous victims are believed to have just left evening prayers at the Muslim Welfare House after breaking the Ramadan fast.

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalDataRetail, said: "The retail sector is used to change, but every so often an event occurs that shakes the industry to its core".

"Amazon is thought to bring change and an acceleration of change, and so having the presence of Amazon there may lead to a faster moving push into food delivery and lower prices".

New competition from Amazon will "exert margin pressure on everybody else and force everybody to be innovative and consolidate", Agnese said. "Additionally, over the past year, Whole Foods has also pushed their private label offering, especially with the roll out of their spin-off store 365 by Whole Foods".

Another bid for Whole Foods can't be ruled out because Amazon's $42 price undervalues Whole Foods' prospects and powerful brand, according to Rupesh Parikh, an analyst for Oppenheimer & Co.

Amazon has been dipping its toes in groceries since it launched its Amazon Fresh delivery service a decade ago in Seattle, and expanded it to California, New York, and the Philadelphia area.

How quickly items get delivered "is going to have to be improved considerably" for customers to order something online instead of going to the prepared-foods counter at the supermarket, she said. That prodding irked Mackey, who has referred to Whole Foods as his "baby" and to Jana as "greedy bastards".

The building was gutted in a blaze early Wednesday morning that has also left dozens missing and hundreds of others homeless. Clement's Church, where May made her announcement, angry residents shouted "Coward!" and heckled May.

The massive $13.7 billion Amazon-Whole Foods merger may also invite government oversight regarding antitrust concerns, a dynamic complicated by potential conflicts of interest from officials tied to the merger. "If there ever was a time crunch, I'd consider it", he said.

According to Mergermarket, the bid is not only one of the decade's top grocery deal in the U.S., but is also the fourth largest U.S. deal in the retail subsector.

As to the question of whether or not this deal is a good thing for consumers, that's up for debate. "Marketplace, Prime, and Amazon Web Services are three big ideas".

"It would absolutely have to come down until it's included in a Prime membership", Anderson said. Stern replaced Roberta Lang, a longserving in-house legal chief at Whole Foods.

The company also has been testing sensors at a convenience store in Seattle to track items as shoppers put them into baskets or return them to the shelf.

"I would have thought it'd be somewhere down the line but who knows".
