Brexit secretary David Davis kicks off European Union exit talks in Brussels

Representatives for the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the European Union (EU) kicked off Brexit negotiations in Brussels on June 19, nearly 12 weeks after Britain's prime minister triggered the mechanism that would let it depart from the EU.

Talks will begin at 0900 GMT with a joint press conference by former French foreign minister and European commissioner Barnier and Davis at around 1630 GMT.

May's government said in a statement it was "confident it can achieve a bold and ambitious deal that will work in the interest of the whole UK".

After the initial shock of last year's Brexit vote and faced with rising anti-EU sentiment, the bloc at 27 appears to have steadied in recent months and got a real boost with the election of new French President Emmanuel Macron in May.

It's possible for the European Union (EU) and Britain to strike a fair Brexit deal which is "far better than no deal", EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier told reporters on Monday.

Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ) (NASDAQ:ERIC)'s shares on Friday traded in the range of 6.93 - 6.99 and ended up on $6.98. The company had revenue of $439.90 million for the quarter, compared to the consensus estimate of $450.18 million.

The Brexit Secretary and EU's chief negotiator appeared together on stage as they face off in the opening round of bruising talks over the UK's exit.

Davis brushed off a suggestion that a weakened Conservative government had dropped objections to a Brussels timetable, which would deal first with European Union priorities, including its demand Britain settle a "Brexit bill", and leave the talks on free trade that May wants until at least late this year. Barnier has said talks on a trade deal can not even start until sufficient progress has been made on the other issues. An EU official said Britain still refused to accept it would owe Brussels anything.

Finance minister Philip Hammond confirmed Sunday that it was still the plan to quit not only the EU but the customs union and the bloc's single market as well.

When asked whether agreeing to this schedule was a sign of the weakness of Britain's negotiating position, Davis said: "It is not how it starts but how it ends".

May's election debacle has revived feuding over Europe among Conservatives that her predecessor David Cameron hoped to end by calling the referendum and leaves European Union leaders unclear on her plan for a "global Britain" which a lot of them regard as pure folly.

The most senior officials on either side will lead work on efforts to resolve the problem of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, a situation Mr Barnier acknowledged was "politically sensitive" at a time when the Tory government was seeking the support of the Democratic Unionist Party to prop up Mrs May's minority government.

Germany's Foreign Minister has signalled that the United Kingdom may be able to secure a "soft Brexit" that keeps the United Kingdom in the single market after it has officially left the European Union.

"So, we each have to assume our responsibility and the consequences of our decisions".

And at a final news conference they traded quotes from their respective nations' history: Barnier cited European Union founding father Jean Monnet to say: "I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic".

"The pessimist see difficulty in every opportunity, the optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty. And so bridging between Churchill and Monnet, I am certainly a determined optimist".
