Nadal, Djokovic headline full French Open schedule on Sunday

Rafael Nadal

Nadal remains on course to meet second seed Novak Djokovic in the last four after the defending champion defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-3.

Kuznetsova, who won the 2009 French Open and 2004 U.S. Open, was ousted by two-time major finalist Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, while 2011 U.S. Open champion Stosur was eliminated by 19-year-old Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

He wasted three of them serving at 5-4 up, and three more when serving at 7-6.

The Austrian is also the only player to have beaten Rafael Nadal during the clay court swing, however he went down to Djokovic in the Rome final just a week out from the start of the French Open, so again, Djokovic will have a mental edge in this one.

Djokovic's victory ties him for second on the all-time Grand Slam win list with Jimmy Connors-the pair now each have 233 lifetime wins to their name at majors. Since 2005, she has only lost once to a player who would not make a French Open semifinal: her third-round defeat by Gisela Dulko in 2011. It was an incredible match but the next day, I was just done. I have obviously played him in last year's semis here, played a really good match, played an incredible match against him in Rome.

Heading into this French Open, many figured the women's draw was wide open, because of the absences of Williams' sister, Serena, and Maria Sharapova.

Muguruza is seeded No. 5, Mladenovic No. 13.

Gael Monfils also advanced in Paris when his compatriot Richard Gasquet retired midway through the third set.

Nadal, who turned 31 on Saturday and celebrated with two cakes, will next face another Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta, for a place in the semi-finals. He was down two sets to one, and he faced a set point when trailing by a set.

Isner was the last US man in the draw of 11 who entered the tournament.

Danish 11th seed Caroline Wozniacki knocked off 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the last eight for just the second time.

Some other notable matches were Andy Murray's statement win over Juan Martín del Potro, Pablo Carreño Busta's big win over Milos Raonic, and Kei Nishikori's five-set win over Hyeon Chung.

However, Garbine Muguruza crashed out in the last 16.

Round 3: Veronica Cepede Royg (Par) bt Mariana Duque (Col) 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3; 5-Elina Svitolina (Ukr) bt Magda Linette (Pol) 6-4, 7-5; 2-Karolina Pliskova (Cze) bt Carina Witthoeft (Ger) 7-5, 6-1; Petra Martic (Cro) bt 17-Anastasija Sevastova (Lat) 6-1, 6-1.

After losing the Australian Open final to Federer in a five-set thriller - and then twice more to Federer on hardcourts - Nadal has been in fine form on clay, winning titles at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

Tributes to Victims of London Mosque Attack
To the north, Manchester was hit by a deadly attack May 22 when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert. The driver of the van, a 47-year-old man, was arrested at the scene after being detained by several members of the public.

Chung forced the contest into a deciding set as play resumed on Sunday, but the world number 67 double faulted on match point to gift Nishikori a 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 0-6, 6-4 victory.
