UK Parliament to open on June 21, following election delay

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative party resumed talks on a deal to prop up her minority government on Wednesday as she faced a battle over her Brexit strategy just days before European Union divorce talks are due to begin.

"We've had some very good discussions today and those discussions are continuing this afternoon", she said.

Colum Eastwood, leader of the SDLP, Northern Ireland's second-largest Irish nationalist party, said his party had a "positive" meeting with the prime minister over her efforts to come up with a deal with the DUP. The DUP's leader, Arlene Foster, and MPs Nigel Dodds and Jeffrey Donaldson, have been locked in talks in Westminster for two days with senior Tories including the chief whip, Gavin Williamson.

But a deal with the DUP also risks destabilizing Northern Ireland by increasing the influence of pro-British unionists.

Later, May will hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, including looking at ways to tackle online radicalisation and terrorism.

The three men were armed with knives and an automatic weapon and carried out near-simultaneous attacks at two locations. The Islamic State issued a statement taking responsibility for the stabbing and shooting attacks Friday evening.

What has Theresa May said?

The BBC said that would now not happen, a delay which could possibly postpone Brexit talks due to begin next week.

The PM's predecessor David Cameron, meanwhile, claimed in Poland that there would be "pressure for a softer Brexit" and Parliament now "deserves a say" on the issue. "There's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it", he said at a conference in Poland. May now faces the task of satisfying both the pro-European and eurosceptic factions of her party, keeping Northern Ireland calm and negotiating a divorce with 27 other European Union members whose combined economic might is more than five times that of Britain.

The Irish republican Sinn Fein party which won seven seats in the election although MPs traditionally do not take up their seats in protest is also wary of the alliance.

"My preoccupation is that time is passing, it is passing quicker than anyone believes because the subjects we have to deal with are extraordinarily complex", he added.

Although there are likely to be some tensions between the Conservatives and the DUP, the two parties have now agreed broad consensus that will give May just enough room to run a government, although nothing like the way she wanted when she called the snap election. "I can't negotiate with myself", Barnier was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

"This new arrangement is very unsettling and people are concerned and anxious about what it may mean", Sinn Fein MP Michelle Glidernew told AFP. European Union leaders gave chief negotiator Michel Barnier no authority to so much as talk about trade until he clinches outline deals on Brussels' priority issues, including on what London owes them.

A Conservative source said there was so far no deal to announce and that a decision on the timing of any announcement would have to wait until an agreement was finalised.

The European Parliament, which named former Belgian prime minister Verhofstadt as its Brexit pointman past year, will have the final say on any deal on Britain's exit from the EU.

Honda not clear if United Kingdom listening to sector's Brexit needs
A key issue he did not mention was the EU's bill for Britain to leave, which Brussels estimates at a colossal 100 billion euros. This letter also presses for an early deal giving guarantees on the rights of European Union citizens working in the UK.
