Memorial for murdered Muslim teen set on fire in Dupont Circle

Remains believed to be those of a missing 17-year-old Muslim girl from Fairfax County were found in a pond in Sterling Sunday afternoon. Seventeen-year-old Nabra Hassanen was slain over the weekend in northern Virginia.

Investigators in Virginia say a Muslim teenager who was attacked and killed early Sunday as she and a group of teenagers walked back to a mosque may have been sexually assaulted.

According to police accounts, Nabra and a group of friends had been at a Ramadan service at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society and were on their way back after going to breakfast at the McDonald's in the Town Center at Sterling plaza. He stood before Hassanen's closed coffin, covered by a black shroud decorated with quotes from the Quran.

Police say that Martinez Torres got out of his auto with a baseball bat to chase the group of youths, and that he struck Hassanen with the bat and then put her into his vehicle and drove off.

A chaplain at the mosque where a slain teen worshipped says members have faith in the police investigation of the fatal attack. A Hassanen family spokesman said all the girls in the group were wearing Muslim headscarves and robes.

Nabra Hassanen, 17, was attacked and killed early Sunday morning. He has since been held by ICE, which confirmed to Fox News that it had lodged a detainer on Martinez Torres, suggesting he was possibly in the country illegally.
