Israel tells civilians to steer clear of Syria border

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit says spillover fire from Syria occurred Saturday afternoon in the northern Golan Heights. Two people were reportedly killed in Quneitra in the attack, Syrian media reported.

The army said the mortars are believed to hit Israel by mistake, due to the Syrian internal fighting near Quneitra.

Israel has conducted multiple air strikes in Syria since the Syrian war erupted in 2011.

Constand's claim was the only one to lead to criminal charges, with numerous others dating too far back to allow for prosecution. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission.

The airstrike came "in response to over ten projectiles launched from Syria that hit Israel earlier Saturday", the statement read.

"Because of the unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty", Israel has protested to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which monitors a 1974 ceasefire between the two countries, he added.

The Israeli military has taken the precautionary step of asking civilians to avoid gathering near the border with Syria, following wayward projectiles from fighting there that landed in its territory.

In April, Israel shot down what it identified only as "a target" over the Golan, hours after Syria accused it of hitting a military position near Damascus airport.

Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Hezbollah have been clashing with rebels not far from the Golan Heights. The IDF has not published any special instructions following the incident.
