Minn. Collegians, Former Wild Players Move to Vegas in NHL Expansion Draft

Even expansion-draft rules that are generous to the team doing the selecting make it hard to assemble a roster with many impact players.

Stanley Cup-winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, defensemen Marc Methot and Alexei Emelin, 30-goal scorer Jonathan Marchessault and forwards David Perron and James Neal are among the veterans selected by the Golden Knights in the National Hockey League expansion draft Wednesday night.

T-Mobile Arena will be filled with thousands of fans as they celebrate the acquisition of new players to add to the knights' roster and welcome the city's team. Vegas shipped defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk and a seventh-round pick next year to Carolina for Pittsburghs second-round pick this year, and then traded David Schlemko to Montreal for a fifth-round pick in 2019. The news was confirmed at the NHL Awards show Wednesday night when Bill Foley announced the selection.

On the administrative end, David Poile of the Nashville Predators was named General Manager of the Year and Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella earned the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach.

"I think someone told me six or seven", Perron said. He did a masterful job of making sure teams did business with him, rather than each other, in the lead-up to the expansion draft and it slowed the anticipated redistribution of players. And while Vegas was playing with a stacked deck, the Golden Knights won big in a lot of them.

After meeting with the Board of Governors earlier in the day, Foley said he was already "very proud" of the roster assembled by McPhee. "We put it together without too much emphasis on certain dates, and we'll study what happens and determine what dates work best for the future".

"I didn't really see that as a hockey place when I went there, but now, with the new team and the fans and season tickets sold out, I think hockey will be unbelievable", Glass said. Vegas had a short timeframe during which they had exclusive negotiating rights with any restricted or unrestricted players from other teams.

They ended up with 32-year-old Marc-Andre Fleury rather than 23-year-old Matt Murray, but both would have been the team's solution in net for the next year or two. It might have been an upgraded draft pick plus a player, all kinds of different situations.”.

Loew's Confed Cup policy pays off for Lars Stindl
Sanchez took advantage of a German giveaway, to squeeze the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his near post to set the record. That was how the game remained as both teams looked to be more interested in drawing the match than losing.

The expansion draft is a celebratory night, but it only reveals a portion of the franchise-building done by McPhee over the past few months. Arguably the most offensively-gifted player on the Golden Knights, he will be looked upon to provide the scoring punch the team needs. He was the 12th Winterhawks player picked by Chicago, the most of any National Football League franchise.

With the No. 15 pick, the Golden Knights chose defenseman Erik Brannstrom.

The Flames lose defenseman Deryk Engelland to expansion. "They don't have to fly back and forth anywhere and they get to stay in the school they're already in". For it to finally happen, its unbelievable.

The expansion draft affects every team in the league, so numerous stars convening in Vegas will be paying close attention to the names of the teammates they'll be losing to Sin City.

"Once we gathered all the information we felt comfortable that if he was there for us we were going to take him", general manager Ron Hextall said. The blueline pairings, now led by Methot and Emelin, are a little better, but this is still a bunch of fourth defensemen, and they're going to get torn up by the league's better forwards.
