Ireland made to work hard for victory over Japan

Ireland overpowered Japan 35-13 on Saturday for their second straight win over their hosts to finish with a ideal record in their three-game summer tour.

Despite wilting in the heat as the game went on, Ireland had enough of a cushion to keep Japan comfortably at arm's length in a dress rehearsal for their 2019 World Cup pool clash.

"It was very hot out there and players were fatiguing, so it was good to get a good start and hang on".

Japan will need to create more opportunities and show the hunger to win when they face Ireland in the second test on Saturday, coach Jamie Joseph said.

"The other area is the scrum, they were so much stronger in the scrum, they held us very solidly at scrum time".

Hamilton claims pole with stunning late lap
Vettel thought Hamilton had slammed the brakes on intentionally - which is known as brake-testing - which Hamilton denied. The red flag came out when Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo hit a wall exiting Turn 6, smashing up his left rear suspension.

"Having spoken to the players, that was very, very tough going", said Schmidt.

"I think we got exactly what we expected, it was very tough, very physical", noted Schmidt.

Garry Ringrose opened the scoring in the third minute with his fourth global try, pouncing on a loose Japan pass, before Josh van der Flier powered over eight minutes later.

Ireland made it three wins from three in its June internationals with another comfortable win over Japan. They made it very hard work.

The visitors crossed for four tries in the first half and, although Japan's resilience stiffened in the second, a comeback was never likely.

Japan got their second try on 61 minutes.

But Japan refused to accept defeat and pulled a try back in the 24th minute.

From a scrum in the Japanese 22 Jack Conan broke off the back and was stopped close to the line, the ball was quickly recycled and Ruddock barged over, Jackson's conversion gave Ireland a 28-8 lead at the interval. A ricocheting kick bounced fortuitously for winger Akihito Yamada to notch a try on the hour mark.

A 78th-minute try by Ireland substitute Sean Reidy ended Japan's hopes of making it through the entire second half without conceding a point, but Brave Blossoms flanker Michael Leitch, who regained the captaincy for the game, was satisfied with his team's performance. "Tactically we also need to sharpen up as we build to 2019". We can learn a lot from playing against a team that is ranked in the top three in the world. "We fought to the end, but Ireland effectively overpowered us".
