The bus was travelling from Himachal's pilgrimage centre Chintpurni to Kangra's Jwalamukhi temple.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said senior police officials were at the sannidhanam as part of the investigation. The Travancore Devasom Board, which manages the affairs of the temple, said the mast has suffered serious damage.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was overcrowded and the driver probably lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a steep gradient. The locals intervened and rescued the people trapped in the bus. The SP said, "Shiv Kumar, Charan Kaur and Santosh Kumari were three of the victims identified".

In May past year, a bus accident had occurred near the site of Thursday's accident in which seven people, all from Amritsar, had died. They were returning home after paying obeisance at the Jwalamukhi temple.
