20/20 investigates the death of Otto Warmbier

The comments published by KCNA were North Korea's first reaction to Otto Warmbier's death in a USA hospital Monday after it released him for what it called humanitarian reasons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un laughs with General Ri Pyong Chol, right, at a photo session with the participants of the first meeting of the airpersons of the Korean People's Army in Pyongyang on April 17, 2014, in this photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency on April 20, 2014.

"Unfortunately, the terrible torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible", they said. "That's why it remains a mystery for us why he died just a week after returning home", the diplomat said. His doctors said he suffered extensive brain damage.

Warmbier was detained at the Pyongyang airport in January 2016 after a short tour of North Korea. Through statements on KCNA, North Korea said it dealt with him according to its domestic laws and global standards. "Later that day is when we found out he was ill".

The US shot down another Iranian UAV near At Tanf on June 8 after it dropped a bomb on US-backed militias operating in the area. It is said by the Iranians to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles) and capable of carrying bombs and missiles.

Three additional American citizens remain held in North Korea - a businessman, whom the regime sentenced to 10 years of hard labor shortly before Warmbier's trial, and two teachers, who were teaching through a North Korean government-approved program at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology and who have not yet been tried.

Sentenced to hard labor early a year ago for stealing a political poster from a North Korean hotel, Warmbier was medically evacuated to the United States in a coma last week after almost 18 months in captivity.

"To see a young man go over there healthy and, (after) a minor act of mischief, come home dead basically... this goes beyond any kind of understanding of law and order, of humanity, of responsibility toward any human being", Mattis said.

Rodman, who has faced ridicule and criticism for visiting North Korea in the past, has said he was trying to bring sports to the increasingly isolated country. On June 21, the US leader took the formal step of extending for another year a national emergency with respect to North Korea that was first decreed in 2008 under president George W. Bush. Rodman told ABC News he didn't know Warmbier was in a coma when he heard the news of his release. He blasted South Korea, accusing it of seeking to exploit Warmbier's death to press its own demand for the release of six South Korean detainees.

China, North Korea's main trading partner, has been accused of not fully enforcing existing United Nations sanctions on its neighbour, and has resisted some tougher measures. "They're so happy now, because it's more like... it's civilized again".

"To make it clear, we are the biggest victim of this incident and there would be no more foolish judgment than to think we do not know how to calculate gains and losses", the statement showed.
