Turkey rejects Arab terms on Qatar, US urges sides to talk

The United States said the demands on Qatar by its Mideast neighbors "will be very hard to meet".

"While some of the elements will be very hard for Qatar to meet, there are significant areas which provide a basis for ongoing dialogue leading to resolution", Mr Tillerson said. "A lowering of rhetoric would also help ease the tension".

Sheikh Saif Al Thani, director of Qatar's government communications office, said the list of demands falls short of Tillerson's "reasonable and actionable" test and was instead an effort to limit the country's sovereignty.

ISTANBUL (AP) - Turkey's president on Sunday rejected a demand by major Arab states to remove Turkish troops from Qatar, among a sweeping list of ultimatums that the United States has described as "difficult to meet".

The country has been under unprecedented diplomatic and economic sanctions for more than two weeks, with Iran and Turkey increasingly supplying it with food and other goods.

"Even though they still didn't come back to us on this, asking Turkey to pull back its troops (from Qatar) is disrespectful against Turkey", he said.

Qatar has long denied that it supports extremist groups and funds terrorism. They also banned most of their citizens from the country.

Gargash said that if Qatar fails to comply within the 10-day timeline set out in the ultimatum, it will be isolated.

Bahrain, Yemen and the Maldives have also said they are indefinitely severing ties with Qatar. Turkish dairy products have flooded Qatari markets, filling the gap typically occupied by Saudi suppliers.

"He feels very much threatened and reads that the move is actually against him personally", said Abdullah Bozkurt, president of the Stockholm Center for Freedom and author of Turkey Interrupted, Derailing Democracy.

"Qatar has begun its careful review and consideration of a series of requests presented by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and (the United Arab Emirates)", Tillerson said.

Mr Erdogan's ruling AK Party has its roots in Islamist politics and, like Qatar, supported Muslim Brotherhood groups during and after the Arab Spring.

The deal lay stagnant in the Turkish parliament but was quickly rushed through for approval after the row erupted this month.

Currently, there are 100 Turkish troops in Qatar, making up Ankara's only military presence in the Arabian Gulf.
