Authorities say he allegedly set fires in the Canyon Point Campground near Payson, northeast of the Valley, on Monday night.

Arizona law enforcement continued to scour a region about 75 miles southeast of Flagstaff on Wednesday morning for a gunman who fired on U.S. Forest Service fire prevention officer. Coconino County Sheriff Jim Driscoll said that's where they suspect the man may be hiding.

Search efforts will continue in both the forested area as well as through patrols of neighborhoods, businesses and roadways, police said.

The search began Monday evening, after the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and US Forest Service responded to eight small brush fires in an area known as Pond Circle in Forest Lakes.

Crabbs said it all started when crews were alerted to forest fires in the area just south of the Forest Lakes subdivision.

Crabbs said they believe they have the man cornered in a four square mile area.

The man is described as a Hispanic male, about 5-foot-9 wearing blue jeans, tan boots, camouflaged backpack and a blue hat with no facial hair.

"It is reported that he has been seen out in the forest in our area over the last month", according to the Forest Lakes Fire District Facebook page. They believe he knows the area well.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is urged to call law enforcement at 911, 928-774-4523 or the Coconino County Silent Witness line at 928-774-6111.
