Washington State trooper shoots and kills man on I-5

A Washington State Trooper shot and killed a man along Interstate 5 in Lacey this morning.

A shooting near Lacey involving a Washington State Patrol trooper is being investigated, blocking traffic on southbound Interstate 5 Saturday morning, according to state trooper Brooke Bova.

Bova said troopers first received a 911 call at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday from a man who was suicidal and asking for "suicide by cop".

The man called 911 from a location near Highway 167, Bova said. State Patrol started looking for the man and found him near mile post 120 on Interstate 5.

A trooper pulled him over near Carpenter Road. The man exited his vehicle with a knife and refused to comply with the officers' commands, according to Bova.

Two lanes of traffic were moving slowly southbound - one on the shoulder and one on the roadway - and northbound lanes were still open.

Troopers performed life-saving actions following the shooting but could not revive the man. The investigation is being handled by the multi-agency Thurston County Critical Incident Investigation team.
