Industrial production in the USA increased by slightly more than anticipated in the month of June, the Federal Reserve revealed in a report on Friday.

The rebound has been driven by mining output, which grew 1.6% in June and has risen almost 10% over the past year. It was the eighth consecutive positive year-over-year reading for manufacturing output and progress from the 0.2 percent year-over-year gain seen in June 2016.

Capacity utilization, which measures how fully companies are deploying their resources, rose to 76.6 percent in June from 76.4 percent in May.

Digging into the underlying data, durable goods production increased by 0.4 percent in June, with output for nondurable goods firms unchanged. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected a 0.3% gain.

A deluge of economic data is scheduled for Friday, including latest figures on inflation, retail sales and consumer spending. US stocks opened flat on Friday as investors digested a mixed batch of quarterly earnings out of a trio of major banks.

Recovering energy production has lifted industrial output this quarter.

The Fed said industrial production climbed by 0.4 percent in June after inching up by a revised 0.1 percent in May. In addition to the increase in output in the manufacturing sector, mining production was also higher, up 1.6 percent. Utilities output as flat and manufacturing output edged up 0.2%.

It added: 'Businesses should be led by how their customers want to pay, and not by the incentives offered by card firms'. The higher the number of payments that occur on this network, the higher the revenue that Visa generates.

U.S. industrial production grew as expected last month but downwards revisions to readings for prior months meant the rate of capacity of utilisation undershot forecasts.
