Panaji (Goa): The Goa Police arrested Francis Pereira, the man involved in connection with a series of cases of alleged desecration of Christian religious symbols, on Friday night. He has told the interrogators he has gone on a rampage due to his "belief that he is freeing the trapped souls".

Several dozen Catholic crosses, gravestones were desecrated in the state over the last few weeks.

Earlier, in wake of desecration of religious symbols and Temples in South-Goa, state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said specific attempts are being made to create tension in the region.

Though at least 12 crosses and a temple have been vandalised by unidentified persons in south Goa district since July 1, the police have so far failed to achieve any breakthrough.
