Why sugary drinks and protein-rich meals don't mix

One more reason soft drink is bad for you: drinking it with protein makes you put on weight

When researchers paired the sugar-sweetened drink with a protein-rich meal, the combination further decreased fat use and diet-induced thermogenesis by more than 40 per cent.

Research by BMC Nutrition wanted to see what happens to our bodily processes when we consume a sugar sweetened drink with a steak dinner.

27 healthy-weight adults (13 male, 14 female), who were on average 23-years old, were recruited by the team to conduct the study.

"This decreased metabolic efficiency may "prime" the body to store more fat", study author Shanon Casperson, Ph.D., said in a statement. Participants were given 15% protein meals on their first visit after an overnight fast and 30% protein meals under similar conditions on their second visit. Meals were balanced out of with a corresponding percentage of carbohydrates for each particular day.

General Motors quarterly profit falls
Among 16 analysts covering Mid-America Apartment Communities ( NYSE:MAA ), 10 have Buy rating, 1 Sell and 5 Hold. Analysts have placed a $39.27 price target on General Motors Company, suggesting a 8.87% gain from recent close.

The results showed that drinking a sugary beverage with a meal decreased fat use, whilst having the same drink with a protein-rich meal decreased the fat use by 40 percent more.

Expressing her surprise at the outcome of the combination, lead author Shanon Casperson from USDA-Agricultural Research Service Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Centre in the U.S. said, "We were surprised by the impact that the sugar-sweetened drinks had on metabolism when they were paired with higher-protein meals". For the 15% protein meal, that translated to 7.2 grams of potential fat that wasn't burned.

This limits the value of the protein which usually increases your satiety and your metabolism, but also decreases your intake of energy.

The combination will also increase the desire to eat more unhealthy junk food for hours after finishing breakfast.

The Minneapolis Portfolio Management Group Llc holds 609,279 shares with $26.00 million value, down from 652,415 last quarter. It increased, as 54 investors sold MO shares while 525 reduced holdings. 76 funds opened positions while 154 raised stakes.

However, the USDA research reinforces there's more to the equation than simply "calories in, calories out", because the type of calories you consume has a huge impact inside your body. This extra ingesting of calories lead to reduced fat oxidation, providing insight into how sugar-sweetened drinks have led over a third of the USA population to become obese.

Sugar is nearly unavoidable in food and drink today.
