Democrats and Republican Women Saved Your Health Care, Not John McCain

Early Friday morning, the so-called "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, failed in the senate when three Republican senators voted against the measure.

President Trump responded on Twitter: "3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down". And McConnell, who accused Democrats of holding votes in the "dead of night", scheduled the "skinny bill" vote in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Over the next two days, McCain voted yes on the motion to proceed on Tuesday, and yes to the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) - the repeal-and-replace option - but then voted against the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act (ORRA), a straight repeal with a two-year delay to craft a replacement. In fact, he even had one of his cabinet secretaries call and threaten to cut off support to projects that would benefit Alaska Republican Sen. They understood that the various bills would do bad damage to middle-class and lower-income families in their states. A previous vote was left open for more than 40 minutes as it appeared Republican leaders attempted to persuade McCain, who made a dramatic return to the Senate this week after receiving a diagnosis of brain cancer, to change his vote.

Did Martin Shkreli commit fraud? That's now up to a jury
Martin Shkreli, former chief executive officer of Turing. "He knowingly lied over and over again to his investors". A defense lawyer said he could lose the massive wedge if he's convicted at his securities fraud trial.

The day following the defeat of the latest attempt to overturn the Affordable Care Act, Republicans predictably expressed disappointment, Democrats relief, and both sides uncertainty over what, exactly, comes next.

Throughout the night, broadcast live on C-SPAN2, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Pence could be seen speaking to McCain, often heatedly.

Vice President Mike Pence, who arrived on the Senate floor to cast what he thought would be a tie-breaking vote to pass a repeal bill, spent more than 10 minutes lobbying McCain on the Senate floor, out of earshot of reporters. He said, "We are not celebrating, we are relieved".

"I'd rather get out of the way and let it collapse than have a half-ass approach where it is now our problem", Graham said.

As we've explained in a previous article, amendments created to stop Medicaid expansion and take out the individual mandate - the requirement for all to get health insurance or suffer a penalty - were being targeted in this skinny bill. But given the divisions among congressional Republicans, it was unclear just what kind of compromise legislation they could end up with, if any at all. "I'm passing this wanting to get to a conference bill", Perdue said.

The measure would repeal the individual mandate and partially repeal the employer mandate for several years, or "for as long as we can", said Texas Sen. The latter two have been strongly opposed to almost all of the Republican Senate's recent health bills-but McCain's decision was a nail-biter.
