Report: Robert Mueller is broadening Russia investigation to include Trump's business transactions

A top Senate Republican is preparing a bill that would prevent President Donald Trump from firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller. It would require "judicial review" if a special counsel is fired while investigating the president or his staff. "Judges will have to look and see if the reasons stated meet the statutory definitions", he said.

Trump and his team have spent weeks seeking to publicly discredit special prosecutor Robert Mueller and his circle of legal aides investigating Moscow's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, and the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

"As a human being I think [Trump] should show some respect for Jeff Sessions", Graham said. He said he is now working on the bill and does not yet know when it will be finalized. Graham and others say they fear firing Sessions would be the first step in a White House attempt to install a new attorney general who would fire Mueller.

But Trump has turned on his early ally, voicing anger that Sessions recused himself in the Russian Federation investigation and accusing Sessions of being "very weak" on pursuing charges against former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Mr Mueller has not given any details of his investigation but U.S. media have reported he is investigating Mr Trump for possible obstruction of justice, both in the firing of Mr Comey and whether Mr Trump tried to end an inquiry into sacked national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The fiery remarks signal that members of Trump's own party have grown increasingly irritated by possible efforts by the president to tamp down the Russian Federation investigations.

Graham said he was crafting the legislation because "we need a check and balance here" and that the bill will apply to Trump as well as all future presidents.

Senator Lindsey Graham, who briefly ran against Trump in the Republican presidential primary, also insisted there would be "holy hell to pay" if Trump were to sack his embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Mr Sessions, known for his hardline anti-immigration stance, was one of then-candidate Mr Trump's earliest supporters in Washington. By statute, the ability to fire a special counsel sits with the attorney general.

Meanwhile, Sessions said he has no intention of resigning. "It's unfair to Jeff Sessions, he's a good man who deserves better, and some of the suggestions the president is making go way beyond what's acceptable".
