Indian-American economist Arvind Panagariya is stepping down as vice chairperson of Niti Aayog, the government's policy think tank, and returning to academics in New York's Columbia University.

Officials sources said here that Mr Panagariya could not get his leave from the Columbia University further extended, so he made a decision to quit to rejoin as professor of economics.

He, has, however told the Prime Minister that he would be available for serving the nation in anyway possible while continuing his academic assignment.

Before joining the NITI Aayog, Panagariya was the Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University. Niti Aayog, or the National Institution for Transforming India, replaced the Nehruvian era Planning Commission in 2014 and Panagariya was its first vice-chairman.

Panagariya, who is standing down after two-and-a-half years in the job, said he is satisfied with the stint in which his team built the organisation's foundation and forged ties with the Centre and states.

Panagariya, a graduate from Rajasthan University, has a doctorate in Economics from Princeton University.

The Aayog was set up by an executive order with the Prime Minister as chairman, a full-time vice president and four permanent members but the fourth member could not be appointed as yet. He has also held the post of the chief economist with the Asian Development Bank and professor of economics and co-director, Center for International Economics, University of Maryland. In his long career as economist, he has also edited "India Policy Forum", a journal modeled on the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity and jointly published by the Brookings Institution, and the National Council on Applied Economic Research.

The Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan, third highest civilian honour in India.
