Benghazi's Back! Judge Orders State Dept to Obtain Emails From Clinton Aides

Federal judge orders State Department to search for more Clinton Benghazi emails

Judge Amit Mehta ruled that the State Department has not done enough to try to track down messages that Clinton, as Secretary of State, may have sent about the assault on the USA diplomatic compound in Libya in 2012, according to a report in Politico.

The election might be over, but former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton still isn't off the hook for her Benghazi emails.

Judge Mehta noted in his ruling that the State Department also searched tens of thousands of personal account emails that three former top aides to Clinton-Huma Abedin, Cheryl Mills, and Jake Sullivan-had turned over to the agency, as well as emails the FBI collected during its investigation of Clinton's private email account and the server she kept in her home.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled the State Department has not put enough effort into tracking down messages Clinton may have sent about the assault in which four Americans were killed, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Clinton turned over approximately 30,000 emails discussing State business, including the Benghazi attack.

"This major court ruling may finally result in more answers about the Benghazi scandal - and Hillary Clinton's involvement in it - as we approach the attack's fifth anniversary", Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement, adding that it is "remarkable" President Donald Trump's administration hasn't been more proactive. "Therefore, State has an obligation to search its own server for responsive records", Mehta wrote in his ruling on the matter.

Judicial Watch first submitted a FOIA request shortly after news broke that Clinton had used an unofficial email server while serving as the head of the State Department in March of 2015.

"That seems to be an obvious place for State to search if State had been interested in actually finding records responsive to these [Freedom of Information Act] requests", Hayes said.

The State Department has until September 22 of this year to update the court on its additional search.

A Justice Department spokesman told Politico the agency is "reviewing" the order.
