Global uncertainty pushes gold

European stocks are slated to open lower Wednesday as investors around the world pile cash into safe-haven assets amid increasingly unsafe rhetoric between North Korea and the United States. Investors are leaving the index to look to traditional safe-havens such as the Swiss franc, the dollar, or gold.

Officials in North Korea said they were "carefully examining" a strike on Guam, which is home to around 163,000 people and two US military installations and threatened a further "all-out war wiping out all the strongholds of enemies, including the USA mainland" in a government statement. "The level of risk aversion we're seeing suggests traders still believe the prospect of military action is very small but precautions are still being taken nonetheless, as this still has the potential to escalate very quickly and unexpectedly".

The UK's FTSE 100 index fell 66.36 points, or 0.9%, to 7,323.58 in early trade, having dropped 1.4% on Thursday. The grim mood also spread to eurozone markets, with the French CAC 40 falling 0.9%.
