After being undermined by strong USA data, gold reversed sharply to scale 8-week highs as tensions surrounding North Korea increased sharply.

As soon as the plan is developed, it will be referred to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un who will kick off its implementation, if need be, KCNA noted. It would be up to Kim whether the move is actually carried out.

On Thursday, Trump said that his threat earlier this week to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang, if it launched an attack, may not have been tough enough.

"North Korea's provocative actions, including this time, are obviously provocative to the region including Japan as well as to the security of the worldwide community", Yoshihide Suga, Japan's chief government spokesman, told reporters.

US diplomats aren't giving up on avoiding a military conflict.

Guam was claimed by Spain in 1565 and became a USA territory in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. It has limited self-government, with a popularly elected governor, small legislature, and non-voting delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for US president.

"U.S. tech is a case in point.

He understands only force", the command said.

Dubbed the "Tip of the Spear", Guam is a key to the U.S. military's forward deployed presence in the Pacific and is home to thousands of American service members and their families. Manufacturer Lockheed-Martin describes it as: 'a long-range, conventional, air-to-ground, precision standoff missile for the USA and allied forces'.

Guamanians have served in all major USA wars since World War II and see military service as a source of pride. Today, Naval Base Guam is the home port for four nuclear-powered fast attack submarines and two submarine tenders.

North Korea responded by saying it was "carefully examining" the idea of a missile strike on Guam, a U.S. Pacific territory. It has two 2-mile (3-kilometer) -long runways and large fuel and munitions storage facilities.

There's a sense of patriotism among those who cite the island's history of Guam residents serving in the USA military.

The U.S. military began rotating bombers - the B-2 stealth bomber as well as the B-1 and B-52 - to Andersen in 2004. Trump has said he will not allow Pyongyang to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the United States.

The U.S. has pumped billions of dollars into its missile defense systems and sold hundreds of millions of dollars' worth to its allies, including the very controversial deployment of a state-of-the-art system known by its acronym, THAAD, in South Korea. The ship-based defenses are created to kill a missile that's in midflight, while the ground-based ones take out whatever missiles make it through and are in the final stage.
