Labor's Penny Wong gave an emotional speech against the gay marriage plebiscite

Earlier today, when the Australian Senate rejected the Government's proposal of a compulsory plebiscite on marriage equality for a second time, a number of Senators took the opportunity to make reasoned, compassionate speeches on why a plebiscite is a awful idea.

The Senator made it clear Labor would be opposing the motion to hold a plebiscite and has urged all senators to do the same.

The "Sea of Hearts" display launched in support of marriage equality yesterday.

"And I call on both sides of this debate to respect whatever result the plebiscite gives us", he said.

"The Australian Christian Lobby described our children as "the stolen generation".

"You talk about unifying moments?" It is not a unifying moment. "This is exposing our children to that kind of hatred".

She also targeted Liberal Senator Mathias Cormann who claimed the plebiscite could be a "unifying moment" and that people could be respectful.

The Prime Minister has been under fire since announcing the plebiscite this week, despite the fact he said he'd be voting for same sex marriage.

Labor, the Greens and the Nick Xenophon Team on Wednesday had the numbers to tie a vote at 31-all, meaning the move was defeated.

"They simply can not countenance people like me, and others, being equal - simple as that".

"If you're anxious about religious freedom and freedom of speech, vote "No", and if you don't like political correctness, vote "No" because voting "No" will help to stop political correctness in its tracks". "How they act is a matter for them. and they will be judged by Australians, as will their arguments".

The vote took place two days after members of Australia's ruling party blocked efforts to allow a conscience vote in the country's parliament on the issue. If you believe in free speech: "vote yes", she wrote on Twitter.

Crespo added: "I think the top four will be Manchester United , Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal ". Lukaku finished second to Golden Boot victor Harry Kane of Tottenham last term.

"Well, maybe he should stand up for some of the people who don't have a voice, because we know the sort of debate that is already there". "Oh, it's a awful reason to not trust the Australian people".

But if the public voted overwhelmingly to legalise gay marriage, Mr Abbott said he would respect the result.

Virginia Edwards campaigning with partner and liberal candidate Christine Forster at Bourke St Public School today during the local Government election.

"Any decision around our next legal steps will be considered and based on the details that have yet to be provided by the government", the campaign's executive director Tiernan Brady said. Simple as that. They are not going to change their minds on this issue. Australian Marriage Equality plans to challenge it in the country's High Court. He's too busy, governing via postal vote.

She also criticised the Prime Minister for his absence in the discussion.

The government will now proceed with a $122 million postal vote which does not require legislation. "I have many other calls [on] my time".
