Stock markets slip as North Korea tensions build

The FTSE 100 index UKX, -1.04% slumped 0.8% to 7,332.52.

Officials in North Korea said they were "carefully examining" a strike on Guam, which is home to around 163,000 people and two USA military installations and threatened a further "all-out war wiping out all the strongholds of enemies, including the US mainland" in a government statement.

FTSE 100 index was trading at 7,326 levels, lower by 63.67 points, CAC 40 index was at 5,081 levels, down by 33.77 points, while the German DAX was at 11,997 levels, down by 16.82 points.

Those moves left the Stoxx Europe 600 down by 0.7% to 379.84, with only the utilities sector, considered defensive, notching a small gain at the close.

US President Donald Trump laid on another round of rhetoric against the North Korean plans for an attack on one of the United States' military bases in the Pacific. Additionally, China weighed in on the standoff, saying in an editorial in state-run Global Times that Beijing will intervene if the US strikes first against North Korea.

"The market's dent only lasted for a week in April when tension rose between them after North Korea launched a missile".

But others believe North Korea has no intention of backing down.

Japan's Nikkei had been down more than 1% overnight Tuesday and South Korean shares had also slipped.

Stock markets extend losses at open
Rival TripAdvisor also slumped after its latest quarterly report showed that online and transaction revenue growth fell sharply. Benchmark 10-year notes US10YT=RR were last up 12/32 in price to yield 2.201 percent, from 2.242 percent late on Wednesday.

Mike van Dulken, head of research at Accendo Markets, said, "The negative European open comes as U.S".

In London trade, gold producers were a bright spot as prices for the metal leapt more than 1% to around $1,279 an ounce. The SMI benchmark in Zurich was the biggest decliner in the region, falling 1.3% in the opening hour of trading as investors sought safety in the Swiss franc, which rose 1.12% against the euro and pushed the value of stocks which earn the bulk of their revenues in USA dollars lower.

The euro fetched $1.1748, not far off from $1.1752 late Wednesday in NY.
