The path of totality of the Great American Eclipse is through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and SC.

While some prepare to make the trek somewhere in the USA where the eclipse will be total, others are staying behind to hold a free viewing party at the observatory near Little Wolf Beach in Tupper Lake. As the eclipse date draws closer, those glasses are getting harder to find. "If you don't do that soon, it's going to be too late".

Jim Lattis, director of UW-Madison's Space Place astronomy outreach center, said he is out of glasses he ordered to give away at discussions about the eclipse he has led or participated in.

Other retailers to try are Best Buy, Casey's General Store and Toys "R" Us.

For anyone planning to view the eclipse, proper eyewear is needed if you'd like to avoid solar retinopathy, which is damage that occurs to the eye's retina from prolonged exposure to solar radiation or other source of bright light, according to Vanderlei. "It's very exciting for them and they want to take the eye protection off", Dr. Van Gelder said.

Dow winning streak snapped as stocks drift lower
Wall Street saw a stock sell-off on Thursday as rising tensions between the US and North Korea filled investors with worry. US stocks opened higher on Friday after suffering their worst single-day losses since mid-May on Thursday.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the earth and the sun, blocking out our view of the sun. It will be at the midpoint, or maximum eclipse, at 2:22pm.

"I have seen instances where the patient has eventually shown up with crescents burned into the back of the eye, and you can nearly tell exactly when they looked", Ralph Chou, professor emeritus at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada, told space.com.

"The market is being flooded with counterfeits", he said.

"People say, 'Can't I just wear my polarized sunglasses, ' but we're not anxious about the polarization at all, were anxious about the concentration of the light".

Safe eclipse glasses should be stamped with a label indicating they meet the global "ISO 12312-2" standard - although Fienberg said counterfeiters have also started to print that on fake glasses.

Nikkei flat as North Korea fears recede; financial stocks tumble
It is now on track for its biggest weekly drop since the week before the November 8 USA presidential election. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 1.69%, while mainland markets saw the Shanghai Composite dip 1.04%.

"Once you get a hole in your retina, it just doesn't work", Schmidt said.

A near full eclipse is a spectacular event that often only happens once or twice in a person's lifetime, but viewing the eclipse in a safe manner is important. Specialty solar glasses that meet the global standard ISO 12312-2 for direct observation of the sun should be used.

But science is not the only, or even the main, reason to look at the sun during the eclipse. Dubbed the Great American Eclipse, the astronomical event appears to have provoked much excitement and curiosity among the public.

You will also need to use solar filter on cameras, binoculars and telescopes and don't use eclipse glasses to look through them.

Or you can watch via an alternative indirect method, such as with a pinhole viewer that you can easily make at home.

A notable decline by Disney (DIS) is weighing on the Dow, with the entertainment giant slumping by 3.9% on the day. In the bond market, treasuries are extending the upward move seen over the two previous sessions.
