After deaths, UP medical college head suspended

As many as 30 children lost their lives due to encephalitis in last 48 hours at Gorakhpur’s BRD Hospital

The hospital team tried their best to save children, but 30 deaths were reported in 48 hours.

Atleast 63 kids died in Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College, due to lack of facilities.

The region is one the poorest in India and records hundreds of deaths of children due to diseases, including encephalitis, every year. The hospital has a special ward for patients of encephalitis. As is being alleged, disruption of oxygen supply in the paediatrics ward led to the tragic mishap where several mother's witnessed the last breath of their children. "So the report about death of children because of oxygen issue is false", Mr Trivedi said.

The Congress also noted that it is easy to frame the authorities of the college but pointed out that why is the Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh being spared.

Spending on public health in India, relative to the country's GDP, is among the lowest in the world.

Rautela said that the hospital owed 6.8 million rupees (£81,900) to the company, but added that it had adequate numbers of oxygen cylinders.

Two days back, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had visited the hospital that falls under his Lok Sabha constituency.

Both the Uttar Pradesh government and the centre said officials are investigating the matter even as political opposition has sought to blame the Bhartiya Janata Party for the sorry affairs of the hospital.

Adityanath, who represents Gorakhpur in Lok Sabha, turned emotional and recalled his fight against encephalitis that has killed over 50,000 children in eastern UP in the last three decades, including almost 3,000 in BRD medical college since 2012.

Local officials have denied that the deaths are linked to a lack of oxygen supply.

Clarifying the series of events Tandon said, "On 1 August, the dealer (oxygen supplier) had written a letter to the principal of the medical college demanding the payment of an outstanding amount".

"The delay (in payments) happened because the funds hadn't come in", Dr Misra said at a press conference after his suspension.

"The opposition is not indulging in politics but there is a difference between what the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says and what it does", Akhilesh said.

The uncle of an 11-year-old girl who died at the hospital told ABP news channel: "We didn't know what was happening at the time".

The BRD Medical College specified that 34 were babies who died at the neo-natal intensive care unit, while 12 died because of encephalitis. He said that on August 7, 9 deaths have occurred.
