Sanctions, talks important for N. Korean nuclear issue: China

This year's forum came amid increasing pressure on the North following its two intercontinental ballistic missile tests, which prompted the Security Council to adopt a fresh sanctions resolution Saturday that includes a complete ban on its exports of coal, deemed to be its main source of hard currency. He says the North is "ready to teach the USA a severe lesson with its nuclear strategic force".

The new Security Council resolution, UNSCR 2371, tightens existing sanctions by imposing a full ban North Korea's export of coal, iron, seafood and other items to other countries; expands the list of individuals and entities subject to an asset freeze; and prohibits countries from increasing the number of North Korean laborers they employ - laborers whose earnings, the USA says, boost revenues for the regime's illicit activities. "We also gave the South Korean authorities a chance to realize that following in the footsteps of the conservative regime would mean it would lose everything".

On Saturday, South Korean Foreign Minister Tang Kyung-Wha said he would like to meet his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho and tell him that they "must have a dialogue and that the North must stop the continuous provocations".

Last week, Mr Tillerson said North Korea needed to cease both its missile launches and nuclear weapons tests for talks to begin.

Within the framework of the resolution, the United Nations members would not be available to open joint ventures or cooperative entities with North Korean entities or individuals, as well as not to increase the number of North Korean workers already engaged in the projects on the territories of the member states.

Yet despite deeming North Korea a top security threat, the young Trump administration has struggled to find a strategy that differs significantly from what the US has tried in the past.
