Korea's Samsung Electronics fell 2.8% Friday. Wholesale price inflation eased to an eight-month low of 2.2 percent in July from 2.5 percent in June.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index lost 1.01 percent and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe shed 0.26 percent for a weekly loss of 1.6 percent, the largest since the week to November 4.

CURRENCIES: The euro slipped 0.1 percent to $1.1176 while the dollar was steady at 109.20 yen.

Economic data showed United States producer prices unexpectedly fell in July, recording their biggest drop in almost a year, while separate figures showed the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week.

The Korean won also continued to fall, down 0.45 percent to 1,147.2. Britain's FTSE 100 was down 1.1 percent.

Investors are increasingly nervous: The VIX volatility index, a closely-watched "fear gauge", is up 70% since Tuesday. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.2 percent.

The yen tends to benefit during times of geopolitical or financial stress as Japan is the world's biggest creditor nation and there is an assumption that Japanese investors there will repatriate funds should a crisis materialize.
