Gold surges as US and North Korea ratchet up nuclear tensions

The U.S. equity market is hovering near record levels and volume has been tepid following the onset of summer. USA stocks headed lower in early trading Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, as traders weighed the growing tensions between the US and North Korea.

In Toronto, the composite index S&P/TSX has lost 143,08 points, or 0.9 %, to close at 15 074,25 points, the decline being nearly generalized to all sectors. Eastern time. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 69 points, or 0.3 percent, to 22,016.

The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 2.1% to 6216.87 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 1.45% to 2438.21.

"If the USA and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so", the editorial's authors said.

"If the market truly believed the North Korea reaction was imminent, I think it would be down a lot more than it is", said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management.

Bank of New York Mellon fell $1.74, or 3.2 percent, to $52.30, while Citizens Financial Group slid $1.11, or 3.2 percent, to $33.92. A batch of disappointing company earnings also helped pull the market lower, with consumer-focused companies and technology stocks among the biggest decliners. The stock lost $5.07 to $101.91. In three days. the Nasdaq has lost 2.6% - the most since last September. Dillard's slumped 15.3 percent after the chain booked a loss for the second quarter as increased inventory led to big discounts. Its shares tumbled $13.09 to $60.25.

Technology companies were leading a broad slide in US stocks in early trading Thursday as investors pored over the latest batch of corporate earnings reports. Rival TripAdvisor also slumped after its latest quarterly report showed that online and transaction revenue growth fell sharply.

In Europe, the Stoxx 600 Index fell 1%. Economists had expected prices to rise by 0.2 percent.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note settled at 2.191%, its lowest close since June 26, compared with 2.211% Thursday and 2.269% last Friday.

OIL: The price of oil gave up early gains. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, gained 10 cents to $52.24 in London. Meanwhile, after jumping $10.80 to $1,290.10 an ounce in the previous session, gold futures are climbing $6.50 to $1,296.60 an ounce. Copper fell 2 cents to $2.90 a pound. The euro rose to $1.1774 from $1.1752.

The market indexes wavered between small gains and losses for much of the morning, then veered lower by afternoon.

The Russian dollar-traded index RTS was down 1.49 percent, and ruble-traded MICEX fell 1.29 percent by midday. Britain's FTSE 100 sank 0.7 per cent to 7,447.21.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 inched down less than 0.1 per cent to finish at 19,729.74.
