Mattis: War with North Korea would be 'catastrophic'

Speaking at an event in California on Thursday, Mattis said his mission and responsibility was to have military options ready "should they be needed" but stressed the United States effort is now focused on diplomacy.

"The American effort is diplomatically led, it has diplomatic traction, it is gaining diplomatic results and I want to stay right there right now", he told reporters in Mountain View, California, according to Fox News.

Mr Mattis said any action by North Korea would be grossly overmatched by the USA, and that Pyongyang would lose any arms race or conflict it started.

Deviating from the tone of President Trump, who said the USA would unleash "fire and fury" upon North Korea, Mattis stressed that the route forward would be diplomatic, and he repeated the importance of the unanimous 15-1 United Nations Security Council vote to impose economic sanctions on North Korea. The country warned that the U.S. "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!"

Mattis praised the efforts of United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley that resulted in a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning North Korea's actions.
