Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Neet issue in New Delhi on Friday. Also seen are Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai and chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan

"The Union Government could co-operate if the State promulgates an ordinance seeking exemption from NEET for one year and that too for the admissions to government colleges only", the minister said.

Earlier this month, the Health Minister had met the Prime Minister along with Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai requested for an NEET-exemption.Tamil Nadu had ended the practice of entrance examinations and granted admission to medical courses on the basis of the marks obtained by students in class 12.

"Centre can not give a permanent exemption for Tamil Nadu". The state demanding for the exception to help the rural students in getting admissions.

However, efforts were on to prepare students for common tests in future, he said.

Tamil Nadu comprises of more than 90% students from the State Board, which makes it hard for them to qualify the NEET which is completely based on CBSE syllabus.

The Central government has made a decision to grant an exemption to Tamil Nadu students from NEET 2017.

"We are seeking exemption only for seats in government colleges and government quota seats in self-financing colleges", he said, adding it was not sought for private institutes.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Shipping and Highways Pon.Radhakrishnan today appealed to political leaders in Tamil Nadu to keep away from the educational career of students.
