US military says 2 American soldiers killed in Iraq

Two United States military personnel were killed and five injured in what initial reports indicated was an internal "incident" in northern Iraq on Sunday, a statement from the US-led coalition fighting against Islamic State (IS) said.

Two US soldiers have been killed and five injured during combat operations in northern Iraq. It did not identify the soldiers.

"The fallen service members were fighting to defeat a truly evil enemy and to protect our homeland", the statement quoted Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, the commander of USA forces battling the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq as saying.

Thousands of USA troops are taking part in the war against ISIS in Iraq. The vast majority operate within heavily guarded bases, collecting and sharing intelligence with Iraqi forces and providing logistical support.

USA troops have been helping support Iraqi forces battling the Islamic State group - "a truly evil enemy" in the words of Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, Operation Inherent Resolve commander. In addition to the two troops killed Sunday, five other USA troops have been killed in Iraq in the fight against IS, including two in the battle to retake the northern city of Mosul.
