NORTH KOREA: President Donald Trump warned North Korea of "fire and fury" this week in response to recent threats from Pyongyang, which said it was examining plans for attacking Guam, a US territory in the Pacific with a military base. The move added to escalating U.S.

In Toronto, the composite index S&P/TSX has, nevertheless, yielded 40,87 points, to close at 15 033,38 points.

United States stocks also fell, lingering in negative territory the entire session, but notching smaller declines than in overseas markets.

USA stocks deepened their losses following the latest Trump comments, and the S&P 500 volatility index, known unofficially as the "fear index", rose decisively.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korea revealed a plan to launch ballistic missiles toward a major USA military hub in the Pacific.

The news was also greeted with dismay by traders in Asia, with Tokyo down 1.3 percent, Hong Kong losing 0.4 percent and Seoul registering a 1.1-percent decline.

UNDERCOOKED: Blue Apron slumped 17.1 percent after the meal kit seller reported a sequential decline in customers in the second quarter due to a planned reduction in marketing. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, slid 52 cents, or 1 percent, to $52.18.

On the currency front, the USA dollar is trading at 108.82 yen compared to the 109.20 yen it fetched at the close of NY trading on Thursday.

Smaller-company stocks also fell sharply. Economists had expected prices to rise by 0.2 percent.

MARKETS OVERSEAS: Major indexes in Europe were headed lower.

Excluding food and energy prices, core consumer prices still crept up by 0.1 percent in July, matching the increases seen in the three previous months.
