One person was killed and more than a dozen others injured when a auto struck a crowd of counter-protesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville on Saturday.

The "Unite the Right" rally, held in the city on Saturday, was spurred by city's plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a local park.

He was then hit in the jaw by a counter-protester and chased away as tensions exploded in Virginia.

Nineteen people are being treated for serious wounds and five are said to be in a critical condition.

Democrats and Republicans said the President should denounce hate groups by name. "We love our city".
